Strengthening Steele County through Service

In Steele County, the spirit of community thrives thanks to the dedicated efforts of Volunteers United, a key initiative of the United Way of Steele County. This program mobilizes volunteers to address pressing local needs, enhancing the quality of life for all residents.

Volunteers United connects individuals with a variety of service opportunities, from supporting youth programs to beautifying public spaces and aiding those in need of essential resources. Each year, thousands of volunteer hours are logged, demonstrating the community's commitment to mutual support and development. For instance, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, led by Volunteers United, has saved area residents over $87,000 in tax preparation fees by helping more than 350 individuals file their taxes for free.

The impact of volunteering goes beyond immediate aid. It fosters a sense of civic responsibility and strengthens community bonds. Engaging in volunteer activities promotes personal growth, boosts self-esteem, and provides valuable professional experience. Moreover, volunteering has been linked to better mental and physical health, creating a win-win scenario for both volunteers and the community.

Volunteers United also emphasizes the importance of involving younger generations in service. By encouraging children and teenagers to volunteer, the program ensures that the values of empathy, responsibility, and community involvement are passed down.

Steele County’s dedication to volunteerism is celebrated in April during Volunteer Appreciation Month. Our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner highlight the extraordinary contributions of individuals and groups, acknowledging their efforts in making Steele County a better place to live.

Through initiatives and opportunities coordinated by Volunteers United, United Way continues to build a vibrant, supportive, and resilient community. The positive effects of volunteering are seen not just in immediate outcomes but also in the long-term enhancement of community spirit and individual well-being.
